Introduction

The Department of Biochemistry, Government Medical College has a proud tradition of excellence in teaching and research. We are committed to deliver quality education, research and clinical services. The erudite faculty, infused with spirit of life-long learning keep on improving their knowledge and skills, remaining abreast with the latest. Efforts to provide global standard medical education is evidenced by our highly interactive teaching program that focuses on developing capabilities of students by  encouraging problem-solving attitude , critical thinking, research and quest for knowledge. A culture devoted to scholarship, professional integrity, continued learning and responsible work ethics is fostered to prepare students for global competition capable of   delivering efficient patient care with compassion.

Our research laboratories equipped with latest equipment and facilities provide opportunities to researchers to carry out wide range of molecular, immunological and biochemical technique under supervision of faculty with wide range of professional interests and skills, whose research interests span the breadth of current day biochemistry. Tireless efforts from the faculty of this department have led to grants from various funding agencies to augment vital biochemical and molecular research that has had immense impact on diverse areas of human health and disease over the past century.

This department has played a significant role in providing quality laboratory services. Our diagnostic wing comprising of the Biochemistry Diagnostic laboratory (F- Block  , associated SMHS Hospital )  and Casuality lab (24x7) (ground floor, associated SMHS Hospital ) serve as referral labs for all associated hospitals of GMC Srinagar .Our laboratories are  equipped with state of art equipment operated by qualified medical and other ancillary staff with impeccable credentials and adequate experience for conducting and supervising laboratory tests. The laboratories undertakes to perform biochemistry and immunochemistry testing of the highest standards (in accordance with ISO-15189 and NABL standards) to provide reliable, accurate quality laboratory services in a proficient and timely manner and focuses on its continual improvement to meet the expectations of its end users (Clinicians and patients). 

To ensure all above, the department is providing

• Vibrant Interactive teaching environment, using latest methodologies and tools, and the teaching is carried out by dedicated faculty and teaching staff.
• Developing physical infrastructure and getting financial support needed to ensure teaching and research of the highest quality and providing faculty member’s time and resources to perform high-quality research. 
• Providing graduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs that attracts high-calibre students and offers up to date curricula commensurate with advanced training in biochemistry.
• Participating in intramural and extramural collaborations in teaching and research that provides students interdisciplinary educational and training opportunities.
• All instruments and analytical systems in the laboratory are covered by a program to ensure calibration and preventive maintenance on schedule.
• Assessing user satisfaction/feedback forms, in addition to internal audit and external quality assessment, in order to produce continual quality improvement.
• Complying with all relevant environmental legislation to ensure health and safety of its staff.
