   Achievements 2023:

  • To augment diagnostics state of art DBT- NIDAN (National Inherited Diseases Administration) Kendra has been sanctioned to Deptt. of Biochemistry in collaboration with Deptt. of Paediatrics and Deptt. of Obstetrics & Gynaecology GMC Srinagar and associated hospitals under centrally sponsored UMMID (Unique Methods of Management of Inherited Disorders) scheme by  Department of Biotechnology (DBT-GOI).
  • Diagnostic facilities in GMC Srinagar and associated SMHS hospital took a big leap with installation of Lab Track System (Full Lab automation)-First time in Government sector in North India, followed by installation of fully automated Abbot Allinity Integrated clinical chemistry and Immunoassay Ci series with high throughput of 1600 tests per hour.
  • Around 2 lac routine and advanced investigations, including thyroid,other hormone profiles, cardiac markers, tumour markers etc. are done per month with high precision and accuracy. NABL(National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration of Laboratories) accreditation of routine and advanced diagnostic investigations carried out in Diagnostic biochemistry laboratory GMC Srinagar and associated SMHS hospital. Faculty and number of laboratory staff of this department are skilled as Quality Control Managers cum Internal Auditors by BIS and trained in Medical laboratory Quality management system & Internal audit as per IS/ISO 15189:2012 advanced to  2022 .
  • Under supervision of Deptt. of Biochemistry the Common Collection Cell for patient samples to be processed in the laboratories of GMC Sgr. and  associated SMHS and super speciality  hospital achieved complete digitization and real time online reporting of Biochemistry & Pathology reports, greatly benefitting patient care. 
  • Advanced investigations started(2021to 23 ) :BNP,NT-pro BNP, Homocysteine,IL-6,IL-10,TNF Alpha, Procalcitonin, hsCRP, C-peptide , anti TPO, Antinuclear Cytoplasmic antibodies ,Troponin I.
  • Biological safety Level (BSL) 2 laboratory set up .
  • Under the aegis of National institute of immunohematology (NIIH) Mumbai, Deptt. of Biochemistry GMC Srinagar and associated laboratory SMHS hospital in collaboration with MRU successfully established advanced Immunodiagnostic facilities wherein ANA, dsDNA and ANCA are being provided free of cost to the patients.
  • This department is a designated Research Centre of Univ. of Kashmir.Departmental Research Committee has been authorized for Ph.D programme under faculty of Allied Medical Sciences, Univ. of Kashmir. Departmental research has been augmented by availability of advanced techniques including Real time PCR ,micro RNA analysis, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR)spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy, FRET(Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer)assay, BRET(Bioluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer) assay  for high end biomedical research.
  • Faculty published Forty-five research articles in indexed journals of repute and twenty book chapters (2021 to 2023). Department has played a significant role in developing Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) funded by ICMR.

  • Workshop/CME on World Diabetes Day BIOCON GMC 2022 (Nov).Souvenir released. Workshop on Estimation of Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) by latest Boronate Affinity High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). A diabetes screening and monitoring camp approved by International Diabetes Federation, Brussels, Belgium was held on World Diabetes Day, November 14.
  • Workshop cum hands-on training on Immuno-Diagnostics was held in collaboration with NIIH Mumbai and MRU in Augst 2022(Fifty Participants).
  • Guest lecture on ‘Key aspects of Molecular carcinogenesis’- 17th Nov 23.


    Previous Achievements:-
  • In response to COVID-19 pandemic Dept. of Biochemistry GMC Sgr took immediate measures. To determine community transmission this department in collaboration with Deptt of Community Medicine GMC Sgr. was a pioneer in successfully carrying out the sero-prevalence of IgG against SARS COV-2 The Covid-19 panel was introduced to provide diagnostic backup at the earliest.

  • Biochemistry GMC Sgr is a Research Centre of University of Kashmir for  carrying out research leading to award of M.Phil/ Ph.D degree. Collaborative research with University of Kashmir, SKUAST and other departments of GMC Sgr is fostered .

  • State of art Research Labs have been established wherein clinical and molecular research on various disease processes is being carried out. Research project funding from key Govt of India funding agencies has been managed.

  • Department of Biochemistry GMC Sgr received GOI Infrastructure development funds under DST –F. Bioinformatics core was sanctioned.

  • This department has been instrumental in establishment of Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) funded by ICMR in GMC Srinagar. Currently, Chairperson of this department is the Nodal officer of MRU GMC Sgr.

  • Diagnostic Wing -SMHS Diagnostic Biochemistry laboratories carrying out advanced and routine investigations are reputed for their quality services. NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing & Calibration of Laboratories) Accreditation of these laboratories has been initiated . Faculty & Laboratory staff   of  Biochemistry Deptt. GMC Sgr  are  skilled as Quality Control Managers cum Internal Auditors by BIS and trained in Medical laboratory Quality management system & Internal audit as per IS/ISO 15189:2012. Full Laboratory Automation   is underway,Lab Track System along with allied supportive services has been approved by high powered committee for funding through JKIDFC in its sixth meeting convened on 25th Feb 2019 to the tune of 05 Crores .

  • Department Of Biotechnology (DBT GOI) has recently selected amongst the   ‘Twenty  Success  Stories’  of DBT-GOI a  project carried out by this Department entitled , “A project on  Awareness generation and screening for cervical cancer in women above 30 years age”. This was implemented by Government Medical College, Srwherein 2000 women were screened for cervical cancer through awareness generation cum screening camps. Around 8000 women were provided free consultation for cervical cancer screening by a screening team of gynaecologists, biochemists, pathologists and health care workers through this programme. Women were made aware of benefits of screening for cervical cancer and motivated to come forward for screening for this deadly disease
