Achievements

It is very heartening for the department of pediatrics GMC Srinagar to be a front line contributor in significantly reducing the infant mortality rate from 26 per 1,000 live births in 2015 to 17 per 1,000 live births in 2020 as per the Sample Registration System (SRS) Statistical Report 2020.  A widely appreciated report, released by the Registrar General of India, J&K is witnessing a progressive decrease in infant mortality rate (IMR), under 5 mortality rate (U5MR) and neo-mortality rate (NMR) since 2014.

Year 2022 is the historical year for the child health and disease prevention in the UT of J&K, as decades old dream of pediatric sub-specialties and super-specialties with all medical, and rehabilitative services for the optimal care of needy children are in place under one roof, the 500 bedded Govt. Children’s Hospital Bemina Srinagar. The smooth and systematic changeover from the erst-while G B Pant General Hospital to this new 500 bedded Govt. Children’s Hospital Bemina Srinagar was a dream come true for all the former and current pediatric ideologies of the Department who have always strived for the upliftment of the child health services.

The new Hospital has been conceived as a multi-specialty, advanced pediatric center which is well on its way to meet the expectations. The infrastructure of the Hospital is at par with any premier pediatric centers of the country. The Pediatric intensive and Neonatal intensive care units are fully functional and are providing state of the art services to the needy patients.  This is supported by A level-I and Level-II step-down nursery. A High Dependency Unit (HDU) with all the facilities for treatment and monitoring of the patients is about to become fully functional.

Besides general pediatric services the new 500 bedded children’s hospital has almost all sub-specialties in place like Neonatology,  Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Gastroenterology Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Pediatric Radiology, Pediatric   Microbiology, Pediatric Hematology, Pediatric Nephrology, and Pediatric Nutrition. We are blessed to have the upgraded District early intervention center (DEIC) with all the facilities for comprehensive management of children with Neuropsychological and Neurodevelopment problems.

Pediatric Neurology is dealing with all kind of  prevalent neurological ailments and has won accolades from all quarters of the society and medical fraternity. In its recognition 2 fellowship seats have been granted, this will help in scaling up the pediatric neurological services.

Similarly division of Neonatology is one of the best neonatology centers of the north India, well equipped with all the modern facilities duly managed by enthusiastic qualified and dedicated faculty and paramedics.  There are almost 100-150 in-hospitalized neonates at a particular point of time, with one of the best possible outcomes well appreciated by the state and central health services. We have already applied for fellowship programme in Neonatology.

All the days our department is providing pediatric Cardiology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, and Microbiology services, a kind of service far ahead by similar level of institutes in our part of country.

The smooth  shifting of Pediatric Hospital from erst while GB Pant General Hospital Sonwar Srinagar to 500 Bedded Govt. Children’s Hospital Bemina Srinagar was really a big achievement.
