Achievements(2023-24)

  • The department of Ophthalmology was registered for Eye banking, Retrieval and corneal transplantation under the Human organ transplantation act after a period of 2 years. Since then corneal transplantation was resumed out of which 2 DSAEKS (Descemets stripping endothelial transplantation)were performed in which instead of transplanting the whole cornea only the endothelial layer is transplanted thereby facilitating faster rehabilitation of vision.  Limbal epithelial transplantation was done in a young boy who had suffered chemical injury thereby restoring vision. All these procedures done at higher centres at a high cost were provided free of cost.
  • NMC inspection was held successfully for the post graduate recognition of the department and upgradation of pg seats.
  • Procurement of high end equipment was done for the department which included 2 Topcon microscopes with high definition recording, 2 Legion phaco emulsification machines with advanced operational ability thus facilitating faster surgeries, increasing the quantity as well as quality of surgery.
  • National organ donation day was celebrated in July with talks by the faculty in the college auditorium increasing awareness and encouraging students and masses about organ donation. In the same context.
  • Students and faculty of Ophthalmology of Government medical College Srinagar participated in the Half marathon held at Zabarwan Dal Lake in collaboration with the J and K State Organ and Tissue Transplant  Organisation (SOTTO) where our HOD Dr.(Prof.) Sabia Rashid  was the Guest of honour.This event was held to increase the awareness among the masses regarding the need and importance of organ donation with emphasis on eye donation

  • Till date 180 corneal transplantations have  been performed in GMC Srinagar which include the latest lamellar keratoplasties.
