Department of Psychiatry is recognized Postgraduate department which caters to psychiatric patients of Kashmir division,Ladakh Division as well as Chenab valley. It runs two hospitals; a 100 bedded Institute of Mental Health& Neurosciences (IMHANS); erstwhile Government Psychiatric Disease Hospital at Kathi Darwaza near Badam Wari Park and 30 bedded Community General Hospital Unit in the premises of SMHS Hospital Srinagar.

Details of Clinical work
·OPD patients All kinds of Neuro-Psychiatricdisorder Patients visit our hospitals at IMHANS and community center (SMHS).
·IPD patients Roundthe clockadmission facilities for all kinds of mentaldisorders.
·De addiction services (OPD and IPD services fordrug users are provided 24x7. Opioidusers are being treated under Oralsubstitution Therapy.Individual therapies as well as group therapies are beingprovided to users by Clinical psychologists. Better coordination with teachersas well NGOs for early identification and treatment of Drug abusers has beenthe focus. To address the menace of addiction, religious teachers are beinginvolved so that people are made aware of ill effects of addiction on societyin general and family in particular.
·Specialty clinics:Child Psychiatry clinic, Women’sMental Health Clinic and Memory clinic are operational.
·Psychological Services:Counseling, psycho-therapies,Psychological testing (IQ assessment, personality assessment, Neuro-cognitivetesting etc) facilities are also available. These facilities are available atboth the hospitals run by the department.
·Lab Testing: all base lineinvestigations including CBC, LFT/KFT/Blood sugar/etc are done in thedepartment.
·EEG Testing: besides routineinvestigations EEG testing is done routinely both on IPD and OPD basis.
·Electro convulsive Therapy: Modern Modified ECTservices are also available for treatment resistant cases. ECT sessions areconducted twice a week for these patients throughout the year. This is done incollaboration with department of anesthesiology.

·Orientation of BUMS Students.
·Clinical and theory classes for B.Sc nursing, M.Sc nursing (Psychiatry) students, M.A Psychology, M.A. Sociology students from various institutions.
·Internship for various courses of IGNOU.
·Community visits: Periodical community visitsare done and many patients are given treatment in Community itself. People arealso made aware about various psychiatric illness..
·Coordinating with NGOs like MSF, Action Aid, VMSregarding delivery of psychiatric services in far flung areas.
·De-addiction Camps are routinely conducted indifferent nooks and corners of valley to screen as well as treat such cases incommunity itself with a focus on high risk areas.
