Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, one of the oldest medical colleges in North India and first one in the State and so is true for the department of Anatomy, GMC,Srinagar.Anatomy was one among the only two departments with which GMC was established in year 1959 having few room dispensary at banks of Jhelum near current LD hospital with 66 students in first batch. Some space was improvised in the old hospital for class rooms, laboratories, museum and dissection hall.Prof KK Bhatt, first Head of Department Anatomy was hired from Jamnagar, Gujrat. Prof AA Iyer from south India soon replaced Prof KK Bhatt. Two years later, college was shifted to the present day location. On 25th of august 1961 GMC and with that started the journey of department of Anatomy located at present place. Looking back,department is being headed by 11 HOD’s before the charge was taken by the present HOD Prof Dr Shaheen Shahdadin 2011.

Dr M.L.Koul was first postgraduate MSc in 1963 while Dr A.N Safaya was first post graduate (MS) in 1964 from department of Anatomy. Unfortunately intake for post graduation stopped in 2004.After lot of efforts it started again in 2014 with intake of four postgraduate students (MD) and the department had no turn back there after. In October 2017 the department got historic post graduate MCI recognition.Presently, per year department has intake of four PG students. In addition department caters 150 MBBS, 50 BDS, nursing and paramedical students in each academic year.
The department trains the students in all branches of Human Anatomy using traditional and innovative methods. Department procures cadavers from outside state for maintaining the traditional way of teaching. In addition dissection hall is provided with huge collection of imported PVC 3D models. The department houses well maintained cold storage facility and latest dissection kits and instruments. Also Department of Anatomy owes a bone bank with huge collection of individual bones and articulated skeletons. Embalming is done by the department incase body is to be preserved till the arrival of the close relatives of the deceased or to transport the body to the home town of the deceased after proper verification of documents. For embalming we are provided with two embalming machines.
PG Histology Lab
Lab is well-equipped for preparation of histology slides.Equipments includes latest Microtome, Automated Tissue processor, digital weighing balance, hot air oven and double distillation apparatus.
Histology Practical Hall
Department has histology practical hall with adequate number of tables fitted with light source for examination of histology slides by uniocular & binocular compound light microscopes and arrangement for LCD projection. Histology section has latest one ten headed microscope and two five headed microscopes, fitted with digital cameras for photography of slides
Neuroanatomy lab is having a wide range of latest 3D PVC models, imported PVC charts and wet models
Provided with wide range of latest edition books related to Anatomy & allied subjects and recent journals.
In radio anatomical section for undergraduate and postgraduate students department is having two ultrasound machines and a wide collection of CT scan, MRI and X-ray films
Ultra Sonagraphy Machine
Museum holds large collection of wet and dry specimens, embryological sections, latest fibre models and charts.
Dry Museum – bones, joints, charts and models are displayed.
Wet Museum – soft parts including sections, dissected organs ,embryology specimens with anomalies etc are displayed.
The specimens in the museum are arranged according to systems of the human body like respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive etc. Index catalogue is properly maintained by the museum employees.
Lab is provided with latest 3D PVC models, imported PVC charts and wet models
Upcoming section on which department is working is the genetics lab. Recently department is provided with some special stains , latest deep freezer and centrifuge(REMI) for this section
The Department is spread over a wide area. The Department boasts of spacious and well equipped dissection hall, demonstration rooms and practical laboratories. The department caters to 150 undergraduate (I MBBS) and 4 postgraduate (MD) students each year. In addition separate curriculum is for BDS, nursing and paramedical students.
The full fledged department of Anatomy has highly experienced, capable and motivated faculty, state of art infrastructure and facilities to impart high quality and clinically relevant education. A combination of traditional and recent multimedia based teaching are used to render effective student education. Department is provided with facility of latest Projectors, Ultrasound, Internet facility and Audio-visual aids for teaching.
In addition to academic activities, the department is fully geared to support research activities. The academic programme of the department operates academic curricular that are tailored as per MCI norms. Regular internal assessment of the students is held in the form of :unit exams, quizzes, grand viva, terminal and send up examination .
In histology, high resolution images from the Binocular research microscope are projected via a LCD projector for teaching purpose. Also, digitally scanned microscopic images are projected via the LCD projections with variable resolution.
Departmental Seminar/journal club take place once in a week and it is a forum for postgraduate students and academic staff of the department to discuss their research work and anatomy related topics.
Much awaited Post Graduate MCI recognition of department turned into reality after decades in October 2017.
PRIZES AND MEDALS WON
After a gap of 10 years, post graduate MD started in Department of Anatomy in 2014 and students of this PG batch presented their thesis in 6th PGTRP, where Department of Anatomy bagged two positions. Dr Samreen Siraj Bala (First) under guidance of Prof (Dr) Shaheen Shahdad and Dr Fozia Nazir (second) under guidance of Prof (Dr) Ghulam Mohd Bhat.
